Unspoken Gestures: The Films of Sho Miyake

The Golden Leopard win for Two Seasons, Two Strangers at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival confirmed, on the international stage, what many close observers of East Asian cinema knew already: that director Sho Miyake was “one of the finest, most soulful Japanese filmmakers of his generation” [IndieWire]. In this program we bring together key works of Miyake’s career to date—his 2012 feature debut, Playback; the delicate 2018 drama And Your Bird Can Sing, his 2022 breakthrough Small, Slow but Steady, and more—as well as titles selected by Miyake as crucial influences on his own practice. With the filmmaker in person, thanks to series collaborators Japan Foundation New York.
