The Cockpit

Sun Nov 15
Director: Sho Miyake
2014 / 64min / DCP

The “cockpit” of the title is a cramped apartment in the suburbs of Tokyo, unprepossessing in size but bursting with creative ferment, for this dinky flat is functioning as the recording studio where underground producer-rapper OMSB and cohort Bim are laying down a new track, to be titled “Curve Death Match.” Shot largely from a camera locked down to the workstation and facing the duo, The Cockpit follows the songwriting process from sampling to beat-making to writing to the final recording, in the process giving an intimate, pared-to-the-bone, nuts-and-bolts breakdown of the intricacies of hip-hop artistry without rival.
