Four young friends from Bangkok set off on a trip to the west Thailand town of Kanchanaburi, site of the Death Railway Bridge, constructed under brutal conditions by conscripted locals and Allied POWs during World War II; a researcher in the jungle, afflicted by a tropical malady, changes shape before our eyes; what is past is restaged for the present. A pure distillation of Suwichakornpong’s principal preoccupations, Come Here’s slender runtime belies its astonishing complexity. Preceded by Graceland, the director’s MFA thesis film, which follows an Elvis impersonator from Bangkok who sets out into the Thai countryside with a mysterious woman companion.
