Bienvenu’s feature animation debut, the visual style of which could be succinctly described as “Studio Ghibli with a dash of psychedelia,” lays its scene in the year 2075, in a future marked by increasing alienation from labor and an anxious awareness of impending environmental catastrophe, where one day the title character, a 10-year-old wearing a polychromatic cape, plummets from the sky in sight of a lonely girl, Iris, and announces to her that he is a castaway from the still-further-flung future, and will need all the help he can get to return to his own time. A work of buoyant brightness and (tentative) hope that takes a sober look at conundrums very relevant to our own present.
