The Woman in the Window
Director: Fritz Lang
1944 / 95min / 35mm
Alone for the holiday while his wife and children are on vacation, the staid, middle-aged college professor Richard Wanley (Edward G. Robinson) is about to settle in to an uneventful stretch of nights spent sipping port by the fireplace of his club—but then he catches a glimpse of a beguiling brunette in a gallery window and, in short order, finds himself having a drink with the model (Joan Bennett), after which everything goes straight to hell. Involved in a self-defense killing and its subsequent cover-up, Wanley finds himself investigating his own crime at the elbow of fellow clubman and D.A. Frank Lalor (Raymond Massey), the noose tightening around his neck with the emergence of every fresh clue and misstep. A high-style turning-of-the-screws noir suspenser, with a wonderfully oleaginous turn from heel extraordinaire Dan Duryea.
