Director: Lee Kang-Sheng
Cast: Lee Kang-Sheng
2008 / 103min / DCP
Lee stars in his second feature as writer-director in the role of Ah Jie, a formerly successful businessman whose fortune has disappeared with a convulsion of the stock exchange, now adrift amongst the trappings of his former success and increasingly absorbed in home-growing marijuana and nurturing fantasies about a female volunteer (Jane Liao) on a suicide prevention helpline he’s taken to calling and “betelnut beauty” Ivy Yi. A spare and immensely empathetic portrait of the alienation inherent to much of contemporary urban life—and the cold-comfort options on the market for its relief—with strikingly squalid neon-splashed production design courtesy Tsai Ming-liang.
Q&A with Lee Kang-sheng on Sunday, April 27th.
