The Gorgon
Director: Terence Fisher
1964 / 83min / DCP
In their tireless search for new monsters to add to their menagerie Hammer turned here to Greek mythology, unleashing the fatal gaze of the Gorgon on the residents of a German village, c. 1910. Seven Vandorf residents have in recent years been found frozen into statuary, and it falls on the esteemed Prof. Meister of Leipzig (Christopher Lee) to overcome interference by local physician Dr. Namaroff (Peter Cushing) and track down the culprit, Megaera (ballerina-turned-film actor Prudence Hyman), a she-devil with the ability to turn flesh to stone. A small miracle of high style on a pinched budget, praised by Raymond Durgnat in Films and Filming for its “romantic warmth… with oil lamps casting a rich glow on the patchwork counterpanes and through coloured windows, and with some extraordinarily beautiful cloudscapes and dusk skies.”
