The Oldest Profession
No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Noboru Tanaka
1974 / 83min / DCP
Tanaka, by many accounts the most all-around gifted of the ’70s Roman Porno specialists, brings black humor and a nuanced understanding of psychology to this character-driven piece which, in a series of tonally varied vignettes, observes 19-year-old Osaka prostitute Tome (Meika Seri, seen the following year in In the Realm of the Senses) as she struggles to put up with the demands of her crass clientele and the fraught family she supports. Featuring appearances by countercultural figures like poet Sakumi Hagiwara and activist/dancer Genshu Hanayagi, as well as freewheeling formal and stylistic experimentation, The Oldest Profession is among the boldest and most uncompromised of Roman Porno titles.
