Director: Ryûsuke Hamaguchi
2021 / 121min / DCP
Hamaguchi’s other 2021 release, this Rohmer-inspired, buoyant romantic drama anthology film, didn’t get a Best Picture nomination like Drive My Car did, but it’s every bit that film’s equal, a light-handed yet profound work consisting of three poignant, free-standing tales of love, deceit, and the tangled webs we humans weave: “Magic (Or Something Less Assuring),” about two best friends stumbling into a love triangle; “Door Wide Open,” about a college student who, floundering in his studies, plans a “honeytrap” ambush for his instructor with the aid of his older lover; and “Once Again,” about two former classmates confronting their shared emotional history when reunited for a high school reunion.
