Two years after Horror of Dracula, Peter Cushing returned to the role of Doctor Van Helsing, summoned to deal with an outbreak of vampirism at a girls finishing school unleashed by a contaminated aristocrat, Baron Meinster (David Peel). Hammer’s high-finish craftsmanship is on display in every shot and in every aspect of The Brides of Dracula’s production, from Jack Asher’s baroque photography to Bernard Robinson’s exquisite set dressing to the uniformly fine work of the ensemble cast, with notable supporting turns by Martita Hunt and Yvonne Monlaur. Even without Christopher Lee, the genius of the system prevails under Fisher’s hand, giving us, per his biographer Tony Dalton, “One of those perfect Hammer ‘magic box’ productions.”
