The Tale of Zatoichi

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Kenji Misumi, Kenji Misumi, Kenji Misumi
1962 / 96min / DCP

The film that introduced Shintaro Katsu in the role of the humble-hearted blind masseur/swordsman Zatoichi, which he would go on to reprise in 25 more films (!) and a four-season television series, begins with a war brewing between two yakuza clans, and our hero caught in the middle, hired by one side to face off against the formidable ronin (Shigeru Amachi) hired by the other. The combination of quicksilver action filmmaking and serious inquiry into the problems of acting morally in a fallen world struck a chord with Japanese audiences, and created the template for Zatoichi’s many adventures—including a 2003 revival starring Takeshi Kitano—to come.
