Gunvor Nelson Program 2
Director: Gunvor Nelson
1993 / 90min / 16mm
“These three films, among Nelson’s most beautifully crafted works, were made during return trips to her home country, leading up to her move back to Sweden in 1993 after teaching for more than two decades at the San Francisco Art Institute. Frame Line blends still photographs (some of which she paints on) and moving images, showing the full range of her artistry as she revisits her past. Red Shift, filmed at her parents’ home in Kristinehamn, is a unique hybrid film with scripted and documentary elements, with Nelson, her daughter Oona, and her mother as ‘performers,’ punctuated by readings of letters from Calamity Jane to her daughter. Old Digs weaves together a murmuring soundtrack of a family gathering with roaming color images of a rustic village, layered with cut-out images added through stop-motion animation.” —Series curator David Schwartz
