Jarmusch followed his Only Lovers Left Alive with a very different imagining of domestic harmony; his sweetly mellow Paterson being a film that concerns itself with the quotidian patterns of the life shared in the New Jersey burg of the title by Adam Driver’s poetry-writing bus driver (also named Paterson); his irrepressible wife (Golshifteh Farahani), who encourages him to no avail to publish; and his dog, Marvin. Anchored by two knockout performances, Paterson is a study in the pleasures of routine and the lyricism of the everyday, which finds the mature filmmaker Jarmusch returning to his first love, poetry.
