Somewhere in the Night
Director: Joseph L. Mankiewicz
1946 / 110min / 35mm
Mankiewicz’s sophomore effort as director was this sinisterly atmospheric, baroquely plotted, deliriously disorienting “nervous nightmare” [The Village Voice] starring John Hodiak as an amnesiac ex-Marine who returns to his native Los Angeles to trawl its nightclubs, sanitariums, and docks in search of clues to his identity and traces of a mysterious stranger by the name of “Larry Cravat.” It’s a mission that puts him in close contact with the criminal underworld and a rogue’s gallery of unusual characters (Richard Conte, Josephine Hutchinson, and Fritz Kortner are on-hand in piquant supporting parts) while tying him up in a hunt for Nazi-plundered treasure.
