These are but a few of the characters that Midtown computer jockey Paul Hackett (Griffin Dunne) will encounter when venturing into the wilds of a pre-gentrification downtown New York without a penny to his name or the means to get back home in Scorsese’s bravura black comedy of class resentment, all-pervasive paranoia, and creeping castration anxiety, in which the director can be briefly spotted manning a spotlight at punk rock dive Club Berlin. As Dick Miller’s diner waiter explains to the hapless Hackett, “Different rules apply when it gets this late…” As true of the city in 1985 as it is today.
