Hugo [3D Screening]
Director: Martin Scorsese
2011 / 126min / 3D DCP
Fleischman took home a richly deserved Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for his work on Scorsese’s unexpected—and thoroughly delightful—turn to family-friendly fare. A storybook tale of an orphaned 12-year-old who keeps up the clocks at Paris’s Gare Montparnasse following his father’s death who, through a serendipitous encounter with aged, forgotten filmmaker Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley), finds a new makeshift family through his immersion in the world of cinema. From the pulsing sounds of the busy train station to the bravura nightmare sequence in which a locomotive smashes through the station’s walls, Fleischman’s marvelously detailed soundscapes give Scorsese’s pre-war Paris period piece an immediate thrumming vitality.
“Of all the mechanical marvels in Hugo—a mysterious automaton, a wind-up mouse, the camera of early film pioneer Méliès—the steam locomotive is what brings them all together, and Hugo to his newfound family, like a set of converging tracks.” —Series curator Genevieve Yue
