Shutter Island
Director: Martin Scorsese
2010 / 138min / 35mm
An infamous triple filicide has escaped from Ashecliffe Hospital, located on a rugged islet in Boston Harbor that bears a striking resemblance to Arnold Böcklin’s Island of the Dead, and US Marshal Chuck Aule and his new partner (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) are on the scene to investigate. Set in the postwar period that gave birth to some of the most anguished of all film noir, Scorsese’s feverish thriller is awash in the psychic trauma of the mid-century, its soundtrack a catalog of jarring modernist classical compiled by collaborator Robbie Robertson and including work by Krzysztof Penderecki, John Cage, and Max Richter, among others, with Robert Richardson’s cinematography suggesting a particularly jaundiced, blighted version of the Technicolor process.
