Remake
Director: Ross McElwee
2025 / 114min / DCP
Setting out to document the process of turning his 1985 nonfiction classic Sherman’s March into a fiction film—while reeling from the death of his 27-year-old son, Adrian—McElwee, in his first film following a 14-year hiatus, gives an enormously tender cinematic eulogy that is also something of a summation of his filmmaking life, describing among many things the tenuous tightrope walk between necessary consideration of practical, commercial concerns and a relentless striving towards honesty and integrity. All of the elements that constitute McElwee’s peculiar genius—the diarist’s warts-and-all self-revelation, the paring away of inessentials in pursuit of universal truths, the off-kilter comic vision—are to be found in spades in the many layers that comprise the extraordinary Remake.
