Time Indefinite
Director: Ross McElwee
1993 / 103min / 35mm
His complicated relationship with his aging surgeon father, his settling into married life and fatherhood in early middle-age—these subjects, the sort of foundational building blocks of life so central as to often be taken for granted, are at the center of McElwee’s autobiographical documentary Time Indefinite, a film that brings a dry, laconic humor to its very serious meditations on mortality, family, and spirituality. “A rich and compelling cinematic experience… Conveys a sensuous appreciation of the physical world that is so acute that the environment is almost as important as the people… Communicates a sense of the elusive moment in all its complexity and richness being captured.” —The New York Times
