Gunvor Nelson Program 3
Director: Gunvor Nelson
1990 / 88min / 16mm
"“Gunvor Nelson’s experience as a painter before becoming a filmmaker is at its most evident in these strikingly graphic films, all of which involve hands-on manipulation of the surfaces and textures of still and moving images. Light Years and Light Years Expanding use collage techniques while traversing the Swedish landscape, by train in the former and car in the latter. The final two works are made entirely in the studio. Nelson describes Natural Features as ‘a free associative and playfully bizarre form of animation. Here I used mirrors, water, toys, cut-outs, photographs, paint, ink … in many different combinations. The central theme is face.’ Experimenting with video, Nelson performs magic in Trace Elements, creating a visual dance between her camera and her shadow.” —Series curator David Schwartz
