Gunvor Nelson’s Personal Cinema

“Three poetic programs of shorts spanning five decades in the working life of Swedish avant-garde filmmaker Guvnor Nelson, curated and presented by programmer and writer David Schwartz.

“A central figure of the Bay Area avant-garde film scene from the 1960s through the 1980s, when she moved back to her native Sweden, Gunvor Nelson (1931-2025) was a personal filmmaker in multiple senses of the word. She drew from life around her, unabashedly exploring the beautiful, messy, raw realities of the quotidian: birth, family relations, love, and death. Though she intimately observed private life, she always placed it in the broader context of the physical world. Her varied films were not easily defined; they roamed freely, defying societal and artistic conventions to create truly liberated works of art. Trained as a painter and visual artist before moving into filmmaking, Nelson brought her painter’s sensibility to all of her work, often using collage techniques, playing boldly with her approaches to editing, sound, and visual style, using the distinctly physical medium of cinema to externalize interior landscapes.” –Series Curator David Schwartz”
