“Reaction Shot” Limited Screenprint Edition

On the occasion of the new publication INPUT from filmmaker Matt Wolf, Pre–Echo Press and Metrograph Editions present a limited edition screenprint, printed by Leslie Diuguid of Du-Good Press.

Designed by Ben Tousley, the seven color screenprint with spot varnish is thickly inked on 290gsm Coventry Rag paper utilizing imagery from the media archive of Marion Stokes’ VHS documents.

“The day I started screening Marion Stokes’ VHS tapes, I encountered multiple daytime talk shows. I’ve watched plenty of Oprah, but I never thought about the convention of cutting back to silent close-up reaction shots from the audience. As a time capsule, those reactions shots are fun artifacts of hairstyles, make-up, and clothes from ‘ordinary women’ of different eras. At the same time, those reaction shots are proxies for the talk show viewer, and the producers use them to guide our emotional response to the show’s guests, who are often discussing pressing social issues. I was interested in taking these images out of context from Marion’s tapes to reflect on the ways that television subliminally produces our points of view.”—Matt Wolf
