Like the Wind: Lensed by Christopher Doyle

Born in Sydney, Australia, Christopher Doyle caught a ride on a merchant ship at age 18 and set out to see the world, and he’s been on the move ever since. In the late ’70s, with the intention of studying Chinese, Doyle dropped anchor in Taiwan, there collecting a Chinese name, Dù Kěfēng (“Like the Wind”), and embarking on one of the most distinctive careers in cinematography of the last 40+ years. Best known for his corybantic collaborations with Wong Kar-wai—well represented in our selection—Doyle has also lent his singular talents to films by a diverse slate of international auteurs, including Patrick Tam (My Heart Is That Eternal Rose), Jim Jarmusch (The Limits of Control), Ann Hui (Love after Love), and M. Night Shyamalan (Lady in the Water), also screening as part of our salute to this elemental force of nature whose intuitive understanding of the emotional grammar of the moving image has been incalculable in its influence.
