Sat Aug 1
Director: Fruit Chan
2004 / 91min / DCP

Expanding his segment of the same name in the horror anthology film Three… Extremes, Chan’s Dumplings tells the deliciously deviant tale of ex-soap star Mrs. Li (Miriam Yeung) who, her looks fading and husband Tony Leung Ka-fai’s eye wandering, begins supplementing her diet with a special preparation of the eponymous foodstuff that uses the flesh of unborn fetuses for filling. Christopher Doyle’s photography, along with the work of production designer Yee Chung-man, provide an elegant setting to this baleful, bleak fable described by its director as a “post-feminist horror movie,” a work that may or may not have exercised its influence on a little picture called The Substance.
