Director: Boris Barnet
1927 / 94min / 35mm
Barnet’s solo directorial debut spins infectiously charming social comedy from the story of a spunky but sweet-natured, suburban milliner (ill-fated thespian Anna Sten in her star-making turn) who falls in unlikely love with a haplessly poverty-stricken student against the hustling backdrop of New Economic Policy–era Moscow. Barnet peppers the proceedings with classic pratfalls and sight gags executed with easygoing aplomb, while building to a madcap chase sequence as giddily satisfying as any by Lloyd or Keaton, but what marks this sure-handed early effort as the work of a true original is its gracefully understated notes of everyday pathos.
