2010 / 330min / DCP
The life of Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, code name “Carlos,” is dramatized in Assayas’s sprawling, richly detailed, and quite frequently thrilling biopic, which picks up with its title character, embodied by a superb Edgar Ramirez, as he establishes himself as a glamorous young poster boy for leftist direct action in the turbulent early ’70s, then follows him over 20-plus globe-trotting years as he sinks into working-for-the-highest-bidder mercenary cynicism and general dissipation prior to his arrest by Sudanese authorities in 1994. A work of unprecedented scope from Assayas, who approached the material as nothing less than “the story of one generation, plus a meditation on time, history, fate and issues more universal than the specific history of Carlos.”
Presented with a 10-minute intermission after Part 2
