The Informer
Director: John Ford
1935 / 91min / 35mm
Ford’s gut-churning expressionistic adaptation of Liam O’Flaherty’s novel of the same name, nominated for six Academy Awards and winner of four, was a passion project for the Irish American director, set during the 1919-1921 War of Independence in the Old Country. Bounced out of the IRA for his failure to execute an ordered retaliatory killing on a Black and Tan, disgraced Gypo (Victor McLaglen) decides to cash in on a £20 reward for turning in a former comrade that would mean safe passage to the States, only to find, over the course of a long, sodden, booze-bleary night in the mean streets of Dublin, that his unquiet conscience—and his old compatriots—won’t make his escape so easy.
