Tokyo Fist
Director: Shinya Tsukamoto
1995 / 87min / DCP
Having achieved cult infamy with the one-two punch of his Tetsuo films, both now firmly ensconced in the cinematic cyberpunk canon, Shinya moved in for the K.O. with this stylish, unremittingly grim, thoroughly pummeling tale of brutal underground boxing matches, smoldering jealousy, and DIY nipple piercings, in which the director himself stars as a salaryman who, suspecting his fiancee of shacking up with an old school chum (the director’s brother, Koji Tsukamoto) and becomes bound and determined to settle scores with his fists. Hectic, blood spattered, and at times downright surreal, if any movie could actually leave a bruise on a viewer, it’s this one.
