Director: Mikio Naruse
1932 / 79min / 35mm
Returning to Japan after five years abroad, Tamae (Yoshiko Okada), who has become a star actress in that time, hopes to pick up where she left off with Shigeko (Toshiko Kojima), the daughter that she left behind to pursue fame. Instead, she finds her husband, Atsumi (Nara Shinyo), has remarried, and that Shigeko has grown attached to her new stepmother (Yukiko Tsukuba), and that even as Atsumi faces bankruptcy, fame and fortune may not be enough to lure Tamae’s daughter back to her side. Naruse’s earliest surviving feature, adapted from a 1913 novel by Shunyo Yanagawa, showcasing vivacious and emphatic camerawork that may surprise those only familiar with the director’s more contemplative later work.
