Realm of Satan

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Scott Cummings
2024 / 80min / DCP

The debut feature by Cummings, whose exquisite 2014 short Buffalo Juggalos established his singular approach to the documentation of fringe subculture in upstate New York, Realm of Satan is a darkly glittering chain of (mostly dialogue-free) tableaux vivants in which members of the Church of Satan—a group, in the main, with a predilection for ominous ceremony and aesthetic extravagance—are captured both practicing their faith and going about their everyday lives. Combining formal rigor, a palpable sense of all-access imbrication on the filmmaker’s part, and a deadpan visual wit that never shades into condescension, Realm of Satan pulls the curtain back on the rich word of fantasy and ritual hidden behind the innocuous facades of private houses in the Church’s present home, Poughkeepsie’s Witchcraft District.
