But I'm a Cheerleader

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Jamie Babbit
1999 / 85min / DCP

A gaudily colored camp romp send-up of conversion therapy mummery, Babbit’s beloved queer comedy stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan, a high school senior with an eye for her fellow cheerleaders who’s handed over to the “True Directions” program by her parents, hoping to nip their daughter’s nascent lesbianism in the bud but in fact delivering her into the arms of Clea DuVall’s Graham, who faces disinheritance if she doesn’t turn her back on her sexuality. Adding to the fun is a crackerjack supporting cast featuring Cathy Moriarty, Melanie Lynskey, and an out-of-drag RuPaul as True Director’s ostensibly cured counselor, modeling a “Straight is Great” T-shirt and teaching properly manly pursuits to the boys.
