Rocha’s lyrical, dramatically photographed debut feature, shot entirely on location in the precincts of Salvador in the northeastern state of Bahia, follows the efforts of a young man, Firmino, to break the inhabitants of his native fishing village free from the capitalist exploitation that keeps them mired in poverty and the mystical mummery that keeps them from rising up against their exploiters. A work of lulling rhythms and startling sensual beauty, with an unmistakable sense of outrage churning beneath its oft-placid surface. Screens with O Pátio, an early experimental short, an exercise in dialectical montage in which a young couple maneuver and make love on a chess board-like outdoor patio.
