A taboo-busting knee-slapper with a decidedly ghoulish sense of humor, Kim’s debut feature tells the story of the Kangs, a Seoul family who’ve opened a tourist inn in the mountains in hopes of a fresh start who instead find themselves dealing with quite a quantity of fresh meat, their guests showing a disturbing tendency to shuffle off the mortal coil in gruesome fashion. Influential for both revivifying the then-moribund Korean horror film and injecting it with a new streak of comic cruelty, The Quiet Family has been loosely remade—by Takashi Miike, for one—but arguably never topped for gruesome glee.
