On hearing the heart-rending story of Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian mother of four whose two radicalized eldest daughters had run away to join Daesh in Libya in 2016, Ben Hania initiated first contact and then a collaboration with the grieving woman. The result, Four Daughters, is a docufiction work of extraordinary emotional force and cinematic invention, featuring Hamrouni speaking for herself… as well as actress Hend Sabry playing her in flashbacks and Ichraq Matar and Nour Karoui filling in for the absent daughters, their studied performances shading into real on-set bonding and tangible sorrow. Nominated for an Academy Award, making Ben Hania the first Arab woman to earn two such nominations.
