Strawman

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Wang Tong
1987 / 94min / DCP

Wang’s biting black comedy, one of the hidden gems of the Taiwanese New Wave, lays its scene in the final years of World War II and the 50-year Japanese occupation of Taiwan, as an Imperial military marching band arrives in a rural Taiwanese village to return the remains of local boys who died fighting for the doomed Japanese cause, and two oafish brothers conspire to carry an unexploded American bomb into town in hopes of a reward from the visiting general. The inaugural film in Wang’s “Taiwan” trilogy, covering the turbulent years between the Japanese retreat and the establishment of the KMT in the director’s adopted homeland, Strawman took home Best Film and Best Director awards at the 24th Golden Horse Awards in Taipei.
