Cries and Whispers

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Ingmar Bergman, Ingmar Bergman
1972 / 91min / 35mm

The specter of death hovers over the blood red-walled family manor occupied by three sisters living “together”—but in total emotional isolation from one another—in Bergman’s transcendent late 19th-century period drama, starring Harriet Andersson as the cancer-stricken Agnes and Ingrid Thulin and Liv Ullmann as Karin and Maria, the narcissistic siblings for whom Agnes’s agonies are nothing more than an annoyance. A study in suffering and sacrament that explores the mysterious linkages between spirit and flesh, and perhaps Bergman’s most purely beautiful film to be shot, by the great Sven Nykvist, in color.

Introduction by cinematographer Frederick Elmes on Friday, April 19th
