Once Upon A Time In The West

Director: Sergio Leone

1968 / 164min / DCP

"Along with dream team collaborators Leone and Bernardo Bertolucci, Dario Argento is credited with the story for this epic oater, a sort of link between the established Spaghetti Western and the rising giallo, both genres defined by their elaborate and sometimes insanely involved set pieces. Honest Henry Fonda goes bad—very bad—as a railroad baron’s hired gun, facing off against Bronson’s lethal loner Harmonica, in the soaring, musically composed movie that really earns the label of “horse opera.”

“The train delivers characters of mythic proportions to the dusty outpost of Flagstone: a tubercular train daddy, a hero who wields a diegetically unstable harmonica, and a prostitute-turned-newlywed-turned-widow (a magnificent Claudia Cardinale) whose hair remains as sturdy as her resolve, which is to say, perfectly coiffed.” —Series curator Genevieve Yue  "
