Director: Ladj Ly
2019 / 104min / DCP
A fictional distillation of the very real racial enmity that festers in contemporary France and the unchecked police brutality that occurs routinely in its banlieues, Ly’s gripping César-winning drama depicts the grotty suburban commune of Montfermeil as a powder-keg waiting to be set alight—which it will be when overreacting cops go commando in the aftermath of a most unusual theft. A multifaceted depiction of a community and public servants facing one another from opposite sides of a vast chasm, Les Misérables has drawn comparisons to both Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine.
Q&A with director Ladj Ly, moderated by film programmer Delphine Selles-Alvarez, on Friday, March 1st
