Director: Athina Rachel Tsangari
2010 / 97min / DCP

An inspired cinematic pastiche that employs elements of classic melodrama, nature documentary, and the movie musical—featuring songs by Françoise Hardy and Suicide—Tsangari’s film is a keen, often hilarious study of generation- and gender-gap dynamics centered on an ailing, self-isolated architect who lives in the hollowed-out seaside industrial town of Aspra Spitia with his daughter, Marina (Ariane Labed, winner of Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival), a 23-year-old who passes her days working in the local steel mill, exploring her sexuality with a female friend, and being initiated into mysteries of the unknown by an out-of-towner engineer.
