Andersson’s triumphant return to feature filmmaking after a 25-year hiatus, Songs from the Second Floor focuses on a nearly bankrupt bookstore owner who, in the midst of an economic crisis, botches a plan to burn his shop down, precipitating an aimless, anguished drift through a surreal cityscape filled with ghosts, religious icon salesmen, and anxious economists reduced to consulting the spirit realm. Inspired by the writing of Peruvian poet César Vallejo, Andersson’s film is a delectably deadpan dark comedy that unfolds in a series of meticulously arranged tableaux.
