Newly arrived at a Ukrainian boarding school for deaf teenagers, young Serhiy (Hryhoriy Fesenko) is soon caught up in the activities of the criminal gangs that operate inside the school under the faculty’s noses, pimping, purse-snatching and, to his great potential peril, falling in love with one of his “tricks,” Anya (Yana Novikova). A cause célèbre at Cannes in 2014, Slaboshpytskiy’s film won praise for its innovative sound design, long-take Steadicam choreography, and the emotional lucidity of its dialogue-free narrative.
