The Left-Handed Girl
Director: Shih-Ching Tsou
2025 / 109min / 35mm
A single mother (Janel Tsai) and her two daughters, five-year-old I-Jing and malcontent young adult I-Ann, return to Taipei after a long stint of living in the countryside to open a night market stall, there struggling to acclimate to the pace of urban living—and to keep a lid on long-buried secrets whose revelation may very well tear the mutually dependent trio apart. Taiwan’s submission for Best International Feature Film for the 98th Academy Awards, co-written and edited by Sean Baker, Tsou’s directorial debut is a disarmingly charming, understated family affair that weaves the mundane into something that has the aspect of a fairy tale.
