Sidney Poitier got one of the signature roles of his remarkable career as the man they call Mister Tibbs in Jewison’s noir-tinged thriller, in which Rod Steiger, racist sheriff of a cheerily corrupt backwater Mississippi burg, grudgingly enlists Philadelphia homicide detective Poitier to assist him in solving a perplexing murder mystery. Winner of five Academy Awards, including a Best Film Editing statuette for Ashby’s cutting, which moves the film along to the propulsive beat of Quincy Jones’s funky, furious score.
