Müller’s final full feature as a cinematographer finds him as eagerly innovative as at any point in his career, taking full advantage of the liberating qualities of shooting on digital to produce a movie that’s agile, unpredictable, and downright punk rock—perfectly suitable to the film’s central character and unreliable narrator, Manchester television presenter/Factory Records impresario Tony Wilson, played to preening perfection by Steve Coogan. A jostling, loop-the-loop journey through the various rises and falls of Factory, with the cream of Mancunian musical royalty—from dolorous Joy Division to exuberant Madchester rave—along for the ride.
