Director: Rian Johnson
2005 / 110min / 35mm
This 2005 Sundance hit navigates the violent banality of suburban California as teen loner Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) tries to solve his girlfriend’s murder. Johnson’s first feature, initially penned as a novella before being adapted to the screen, Brick holds up as a novel reinvention of the American noir.
“In high school, I was just starting to get into film and honestly wasn’t very savvy about it, mostly picking stuff off the indie shelves at my local video store. Brick really got me going—the seamless overlay of twisting noir tropes and elevated language atop a familiar and deceptively simple high school backdrop—and even inspired me to try and make a short film of my own. Except my two friends who I cast as the leads started dating and broke up before I could finish. It’s probably for the best, I can’t imagine it would have been any good.” —Kaila Hier
