Greenwich Village folk singer Llewyn Davis has a lot of problems: he’s strapped for cash, his career is at a standstill, his girlfriend (Carey Mulligan) needs money for an abortion, and on top of everything, he’s responsible for his friend’s cat, Ulysses, getting loose. Anchored by a breakthrough performance by Oscar Isaac, the Coens’ precise period evocation of early-’60s America is a bitterly funny and bleakly beautiful gem about art’s also-rans, loosely inspired by the life of singer Dave Van Ronk.
