York made her first film appearance as the daughter of Alec Guinness’s whiskey-swilling officer Jock Sinclair in Neame’s captivating psychological drama, based on a novel of the same name by James Kennaway. Set in the barracks of a Scottish Highland battalion in the years following World War II, Tunes of Glory offers a shrewd commentary on the stratified English class system in its depiction of the clash between departing commanding officer Sinclair, who’s worked his way up through the ranks, and his Oxford-educated replacement, Basil Barrow (John Mills), the scion of a prominent military family.
