Kill Bill: Vol. 1

No upcoming showtimes scheduled.
Director: Quentin Tarantino
2003 / 111min / 35mm

A comprehensive tracklist of Tarantino’s mixtape diptych, in which Uma Thurman’s bloodied-but-unbowed Bride methodically sets out to cross off a series of names on a checklist of slated-for-the-boneyard foes, would require several paragraphs at least, but suffice it to say that Vol. 1 contains references to the Australian thriller Patrick, Toshiya Fujita’s Lady Snowblood, and Hong Kong’s Shaw Bros. Studios, enlists the talents of Japanese martial arts legend Sonny Chiba, Battle Royale’s Chiaki Kuriyama, fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, and kung fu-crazy rapper/producer RZA, and generally feels like an effort to cram an entire well-stocked video store into a single, mad Gesamtkunstwerk. “The movie is not about anything at all except the skill and humor of its making. It’s kind of brilliant.” —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
