Director: Ursula Meier, Ursula Meier
2009 / 98min / 35mm

Isabelle Huppert gives a nuanced and fascinatingly opaque performance in Meier’s tragicomic tale of a fracturing family, with La Huppert starring as the uncompromising, iconoclastic matriarch of a clan that’s forsaken society to lead an idyllic, isolated existence in rural France. Meier, a filmmaker with singular insight into the complex relationship between environment and psychology, creates gripping psychodrama just by precisely and eloquently describing the workings of a delicate domestic ecosystem—and what occurs when city trucks building a new road arrive to disturb it. A deceptively simple story which, as lensed by the great Agnès Godard, takes on the enchanted air of a modern-day fable.
