A vanguard figure of the Malaysian New Wave, in recent years Woo had set aside his early experimentation for more commercial work, but Stone Turtle finds him once again plunging into the unknown. An intoxicating brew of Malay Peninsula folklore, enigmatic rituals, and vistas of staggering natural beauty, in which an encounter on a remote island beach between a local woman (Asmara Abigail) who ekes out a living harvesting endangered turtle eggs and a male interloper from the outside world (Bront Palarae) evolves into a distorted feedback loop that evokes both cyclical trauma and the karmic wheel.
